Website Consultant Code of Ethics

I developed this Code of Ethics for Web Consultants while studying for a Master's Degree in Information Systems at the University of San Francisco in 2007. I recognized a need for there to be a more specific Code of Ethics for those of us who provide website consulting services. Our mission as professionals is to assist those who do not have the time and/or expertise to create or maintain their web applications. It is important for consultants to maintain a high degree of integrity, or the entire profession risks losing credibility with exisiting and potential businesses and individuals.

1. Do not discriminate against people on the basis of their age, race, gender, disability, sexual orientation or national origin.

2. Provide clients with confidentiality over their sensitive or competitive information.

3. Undertake technological tasks for others only if qualified by training or experience, or after full disclosure of pertinent limitations.

4. Do not access or use a client's resources except with authorization and for the purpose in which they intended.

5. Be honest, realistic, and reasonable in providing level of effort and work estimates on tasks to be performed.

6. Do not knowingly create or ignore a technical defect in a client's system or participate in the creation of a product intended for malicious use.

7. Respect the intellectual property of others by not using or distributing such property except where permission from the owner(s) has been granted.

8. Honor contracts with clients by taking all reasonable steps to ensure the project is delivered to specification, in accordance with the agreed upon timeline, and that the client is kept informed about the project's status.

9. Do not engage in activity known to be illegal.

10. Periodically participate in projects that allow you to use your skills to contribute to society and human well-being.

11. Acknowledge, respect, and adhere to the ACM Code of Ethics and the IEEE Code of Ethics.
